The Gospel That Bears Fruit

A new letter opens this week, and it opens on a question that has not aged a day. Is Jesus enough? A young church in a fading town had been handed a lie. Jesus is good, but Jesus is not enough. You need Jesus and. Christ and your performance. Christ and a secret experience. Christ and one more thing you have not reached yet. Paul writes one letter to kill that lie, and he kills it by lifting Jesus so high that every add on falls off.

But watch how he begins. Not with the error. With thanksgiving. Before he corrects a single thing, he names the fruit already growing. And he says something about the gospel that changes how you carry it. The gospel is not a message you agreed to once. It is a living seed, bearing fruit and increasing, in the whole world and in you. Five days this week. Fourteen verses. One glorious sentence underneath them all: all of Him.

Thanksgiving Before Correction

He waters what is right before he pulls what is wrong.

Paul is writing to a church in trouble. False teaching has crept in, and he knows it. But watch his first move. He gives thanks. Before he touches one error, he names the fruit already growing in them. Faith in Christ Jesus. Love for all the saints. Hope laid up in heaven. He waters what is right before he pulls what is wrong.

Most of us do the opposite with ourselves. We are fluent in our failures. We can list what is wrong with us without taking a breath. But ask us what God is already doing in us and we go quiet. That is not humility. If God sees fruit in you worth thanking Him for, refusing to see it is not modesty. It is disagreement with God.

Greek Word: apokeimai (ἀπόκειμαι), laid up, reserved, kept in store. Paul says your hope is laid up for you in heaven. This is the word for something set aside and held in safekeeping, a deposit already made and waiting. Your hope is not a mood you maintain. It is a reserve God is keeping. And notice the order of the verses. Faith and love are growing up out of a hope that is already secured somewhere else. Because your future is settled in heaven, your present can bear fruit on earth. The anchor is set above, so the tree can grow below.

Reflect:
1. Are you more fluent in what is wrong with you or in what God has already done in you?
2. Name three things God has grown in you: faith you did not used to have, love you did not used to feel, hope that holds you. Thank Him for each one out loud.
3. What changes when you remember your hope is a deposit God is keeping, not a mood you maintain?

The Seed and the Faithful Nobody

The gospel is a seed, not a scheme.

Paul does not describe the gospel as a message you agree to. He describes it as a living thing that grows. A seed does not have to be talked into producing. It produces because of what it is. That is the good news for the tired believer. You do not have to squeeze fruit out of yourself by force. You have to stay planted in the gospel that is already alive in you.

Greek Word: karpophoreo (καρποφορέω), to bear fruit, to produce a crop. Paul uses it of the gospel itself in verse 6, and again of the believer in verse 10. The same word covers both. The gospel bears fruit, and the person planted in it bears fruit. It is one living process. And do not miss where Paul got the phrase. Bearing fruit and increasing is the language of Genesis, where God told creation to be fruitful and multiply. This is new creation, spreading. From Eden to Colossae to your address, the pattern never changes. Life joined to its source produces, on its own, what it could never squeeze out by force.

And notice how the seed reached Colossae. Not through an apostle. Through Epaphras, an ordinary man who heard the gospel in Ephesus and carried it home to a fading town the world had stopped noticing. One faithful nobody, one road home, and a church was born. You do not need a platform to matter in the kingdom. You need a road home and a gospel worth carrying. Somewhere in Cleburne there is a kitchen table, a shop floor, a bleacher seat that is your Colossae.

A tree does not grunt to grow apples. It abides, and the fruit comes.

Reflect:
1. Where are you straining to manufacture fruit instead of staying planted?
2. Who carried the gospel to you? Thank God for that person by name today.
3. Who is your Colossae? Name one person there who has never heard you speak of Jesus, and pray for one open door this week.

There Is No Secret

Maturity is a deeper root, not a higher tier.

The false teachers in Colossae were selling a secret knowledge for the spiritual elite. The real thing, they said, is upstairs, behind a door, for the few. So watch Paul take their favorite word and hand it back to everyone. He prays that the whole church would be filled with the knowledge of God's will. Not the initiated few. The born again many.

Greek Word: epignosis (ἐπίγνωσις), full, deep, relational knowledge. Not bare information but knowing that comes from close acquaintance. It is the very word the false teachers used to gatekeep, and Paul democratizes it. The deepest knowledge of God is not behind a door. The deepest room in the house is open, and the door is Christ. What you need is not information you do not have. It is a deeper acquaintance with the God you already know.

And look at what that knowledge produces. A worthy walk. Fruit in every good work. Strength for endurance. Patience with joy. Thanksgiving. None of it is exotic. Maturity is not a stage name or a secret experience. It is a settled, fruitful, thankful believer. The world says grow up and leave the beginner things behind. Paul says the gospel is not the kiddie pool. It is the ocean. Go deeper, not past.

1. Have you ever believed the real Christian life was for a spiritual elite you had not reached?
2. Where have you been asking God for a higher tier instead of a deeper root?
3. Take ten unhurried minutes today with an open Bible and no phone. Do not study for answers. Sit with Him for acquaintance.

Qualified

Your portion has your name on it.

Read it slowly. God has qualified you. You did not qualify yourself, and you cannot disqualify yourself, because the qualifying was never in your hands.

Greek Word: meris (μερίς), a share, a portion, an allotted inheritance. It is the word for the piece of the promised land each tribe of Israel received. They did not earn their allotment. God swore it, and God measured it out. Moses told them plainly, you are not taking this land because of your own righteousness. Paul reaches for that exact picture and lifts it higher. Your promised land is not a strip of Canaan. It is the inheritance of the saints in light, and the same God who once measured out the land has measured out a share with your name on it. Same grace, greater country.

So when the enemy tells you that you are not spiritual enough, not disciplined enough, not far enough along to belong at the table, you answer him with verse twelve. God has qualified me. Your place in the family is not a probation. It is an allotment. The question was settled at the cross, not on your best day.

You cannot earn a seat He already gave you, and you cannot lose a portion He already measured out with your name on it.

Reflect:
1. What accusation do you hear most? Not enough of what?
2. Say Colossians 1:12 out loud against it, with your own name in it: God has qualified me to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.
3. How would this week change if you lived like your seat at the table was settled?

Transferred

The rescue you already live inside.

Two verses. And they hold the whole gospel. He delivered us. He transferred us. Past tense. Done. Paul does not say God is working on your rescue. He says it is finished. You have already been carried across the border.

And hear the two kingdoms. The domain of darkness, and the kingdom of His beloved Son. There is no third country. The day you believed, God did not renovate you where you stood. He moved you. New King. New kingdom. New citizenship. New address.

Greek Word: methistemi (μεθίστημι), to remove, to transfer, to relocate a whole people. In the ancient world it was used for deporting a population and resettling them in a new land. Not a visit. A permanent resettlement. So you are not a tourist in the kingdom of God, hoping your visa holds. You have been resettled. Your citizenship changed hands. You belong here now, and the One who moved you does not send anyone back.

This is the oldest rescue in the Book come true. God once reached into Egypt, pulled a slave people out of the house of darkness by the blood of a lamb, and carried them to Himself. Paul says that was the rehearsal. A greater Deliverer, a greater ransom, a greater Passover, pulling you not out of Egypt but out of the domain of darkness itself, by the blood of the Lamb of God.

And here is the gospel, plain. You were dead in your sins, and you could not fix it. God did not send you advice. He sent His Son. Jesus lived the life you could not live, died on a cross carrying sins you actually committed, was buried, and on the third day God raised Him from the dead. Everyone who turns from sin and puts their faith in Him is delivered, transferred, redeemed, and forgiven. Your sins are not pending. They are forgiven. The debt is not being negotiated. It is paid. So when your feelings tell you that you still live in the old country, preach verse thirteen back to yourself. I do not live there anymore. I was carried out.

You were not improved. You were transferred. And He does not send His people back.

Reflect:
1. What old kingdom habit still tells you that you live at your old address?
2. Paul says you were transferred, not improved. What would change this week if you truly lived as a citizen of the kingdom of the beloved Son?
3. If you have never been carried across the border, what is keeping you from asking Him today? He is not asking you to climb out. He is offering to carry you out.
